"When you didn't start the walk, you can't finish the walk. To finish we started to walk."
As the term Saunter means leisurely walk, "The Great Saunter" is relaxing walk around the island city feeling the dawn breeze, cocktail hour sunlight, sundown shower, star sky clouds with exuberant people and their energetic stories.
In this doodle I will stroll through my first "The Great Saunter" day around the Manhattan on 3rd May 2014. My Saunter day commenced by alarm crowing at 4:45 AM. Backpacking some fruits and water started from home at 5:20 AM.
This charm day had a memorable lockdown subway ride experience. Boarded into the car 6 of the subway train 1 to South Ferry. After arriving the station my car door didn't open leaving me alone inside. While I am trying to recognize of being locked down for not boarding the first five cars to get off at South Ferry station there came running six persons running from the next car with angry voices. Train operator aggressively refused to let us out and we were forced to turn around to off board only at Rector street station.
Walked to Faunces Tavern and was surprised at the number of people gearing for the saunter. Until then I didn't know about the eminence of this walk. Completed registration by paying 20$ fee and received my BIB 858, cap, Shore Walkers batch and set for the walk with our 20 feet group. We gathered at the Staten Island Ferry and started our saunter at 7:36 AM.
I started walking, admiring my present moment for being able to walk with these great people who still trust on our natural capabilities. Humans are an unique land mammals who are capable to walk for sustained amount of time. This walk can be described as an arrangement to portray our suppressed capabilities by the machinery and technology.
Looking at the musical instrument sculptures located at the entrance of Wagner Park in Battery Park City remembered my first visit to New York City before four years. Tried taking similar picture of the sculptures as I did during my first visit.
Walked through Battery Park glancing the liberty statue and glittering New Jersey buildings with their reflection on the Hudson river.
We stepped through the Castle Clinton National Historic Monument which is a circular sand stone fort that was built to protect the New York harbor from the British fleet.
While crossing Chelsea piers was stunned to know that this was the final destination for the Titanic. After 6 mile walk we reached the Circle Line terminal by 9:05 AM and waited to regroup. After 15 minutes of refreshment and Ginger cookies we strolled through the four mile riverside park narrow strip and reached 125th street to look at the Riverside church which is the tallest in the United States.
When the earth was positioning itself to have sun on the top, we reached George Washington Bridge at 11:45 AM completing our 12.5 miles of saunter. We rested for 20 minutes in Fort Tryon park adoring the Hudson river side view. We set our feet in motion and came upon the Grecian Temple which was originally built as a resting point for pleasure drivers along the Hudson. Decided not to rest we walked underneath the Henry Hudson Bridge and reached Inwood Hill Park at 1:05 PM completing our 16.2 miles.
We had suggestion to visit Carrot Top Pastries which is in Inwood neighborhood. My body was already in starving mode, I started craving when plan to stop at the pastry place was confirmed. Tasted the delicious triple layer carrot cake and packed chocolate rugulagh for evening snack. We waited for our group and decided to stay together for the remaining saunter.
After a long 90 minutes break and high sugar level in the body we walked briskly to the east river side. Looking at the cloudy sky I perceived that those envious clouds have decided to saunter the sky along with us.
Walked through the streets of varying neighborhoods reached river side again to walk along Jeferson Park and reached Carl Schruz Park at 5:30 PM. Next we all gathered together near Queensboro bridge where we were treated with homemade ginger, peanut, salt, sugar and chocolate cookies by one of our group's walker.
Sauntering tired clouds couldn't bear their own weight so they started sprinkling. Our strong legs are still marching daring the showers and cool wind. Cookies powered us to brisk our steps, latter crossing the Williamsburg bridge, Manhattan bridge and Brooklyn bridge we arrived at the Frances Tavern completing our saunter at 8:06 PM.
We had dinner cheering our walk after collecting our finishers certificate and posing for the group photos.
Amidst last few months of my walking among the trees, mountains, rocks, rivers, sow, grasses, sunrises and sunsets this experience was non wild but powerful and fundamental around the tall buildings and parks.
